IGP vows exemplary punishment to ‘rapist cops’

LAHORE: Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) retired Captain Arif Nawaz says exemplary punishment will be given to the officials involved in raping a student in Rawalpindi.

He expressed these views on Sunday while giving directions to Rawalpindi Regional Police Officer (RPO) retired Captain Ehsan Tufail and the City Police Officer (CPO) retired Captain Faisal Rana regarding the matter.

The IGP directed the CPO to personally supervise the investigation, keep contact with the family of the victim and submit a report with the Central Police Office at the earliest. He said protection of the lives and properties of the citizens was their first priority and the police officials violating the sanctity of uniform had no place in the department. He said a stern departmental and legal action would be taken against corrupt officials without any leniency.

“An exemplary departmental and legal action will be taken against the constables and they would be dismissed from service,” IGP Nawaz said.

Meanwhile, in a crackdown against anti-social elements and proclaimed offenders, the Layyah police arrested 34 suspects and recovered drugs and illegal weapons from them.

The police also registered 21 cases against drug peddlers and recovered 3.2kg charas and 308 litre alcohol. Seventeen cases have been registered over illegal possession of weapons, including one twelve-bore gun, one Kalashnikov, 15 pistols of 30 bore with 74 bullets.
