Arms smuggling bid foiled

KOHAT: The police on Saturday foiled an attempt of smuggling a big quantity of weapons and ammunition to the tribal and southern districts by arresting two persons on the Indus Highway. They were coming from Darra Adamkhel tribal subdivision in a car.

District police officer Wahid Mehmood said apparently the weapons were being smuggled to North and South Waziristan trial districts and other cities for carrying out sabotage activities.

He said a car coming from Darra was stopped at Muslimabad checkpost and upon checking arms, ammunition and spare parts of weapons were seized from the secret cavities of the vehicle.

The recovery included three Kalashnikovs, five rifles, 40 pistols, 1,200 cartridges and 60 chargers. The smugglers were identified as Hamid Khan and Mir Azam of Kohat.

Meanwhile, the cantonment police arrested three robbers in Chakar Kot area. The police, on a tip-off from locals, surrounded the dacoits and signaled them to surrender. They were arrested after some resistance. They included Mohammad Khayam, Faheem Khan and Mohammad Bilal.
