Two PHED engineers held in corruption case

RAHIM YAR KHAN: The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) arrested two officials of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) for their corruption in a project of more than Rs2 billion on Wednesday.

ACE Deputy Director Syed Ayub Bukhari told reporters Sub-Divisional Officer Imtiaz Shafqat and Sub-Engineer Muhammad Jahanzeb were nominated in the case for embezzling Rs833 million.

He said both accused were arrested on the Lahore High Court, Bahawalpur bench, premises when their bails were rejected.

Bukhari added that in 2007, the PHED and Nespak started a Rs2 billion sewerage scheme and water treatment plant project.

In the project, substandard material was used due to which many sewerage lines submerged causing a Rs833 million loss to the state exchequer.

The case was registered against 20 PHED officials, of them eight has been arrested.

He said a report has been submitted to the court while the ACE has recovered Rs50 million from them.
