Ablution and greenery

WATER is an already scarce resource in Pakistan and we have to take stringent measures to conserve it and use it wisely. Muslims perform ablution before offering prayers and use on average between five to 10 litres of water each time.

Studies show this water, which is termed ‘grey’ by water treatment experts, is excellent for plantation purposes.

If all mosques in the country and public places where prayers congregations are held can use this water for the above-mentioned purpose, Pakistan will witness a green revolution within three years.

A well-thought-out campaign is needed to make this idea a reality First, religious scholars need to highlight this issue by giving sermons particularly before Friday prayers. Second, a mass awareness campaign on mainstream media and social media should be launched.

Third, local government should approach the mosques’ management for cooperation to install grey water systems for collection of water.

Finally, the idea needs to be popularised nationally so that the people adopt it to make Pakistan green.
