12 killed by flash floods in South Waziristan, Pishin

WANA / QUETTA: Twelve people were killed by flash floods triggered by widespread rain in South Waziristan tribal district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pishin district of Balochistan on Saturday.

According to additional deputy commissioner Dilnawaz Wazir, a group of people were en route to a wedding when their vehicle got caught in a flash flood in Toi Khulla tehsil of South Waziristan and was swept away. Six women from the group were killed while five other people were rescued by the Levies personnel and volunteers.

Two children lost their lives when they drowned in the floodwaters of the Wacha Khwara area of South Waziristan. Their bodies were retrieved by the South Waziristan Scouts, who also rescued five people in the area.

The additional deputy commissioner told Dawn that heavy rains triggered flash floods in different parts of the district.

“The flash floods also damaged two meat shops and swept away four vehicles in Wana [district headquarters of South Waziristan]” he said.

In Pishin, four people of a family were swept away in the Khanozai area.

According to reports, 65-year-old Abdul Mannan was on his way to Khanozai with his three grandsons by car. When he attempted to cross a seasonal nullah — that was inundated with floodwaters following heavy rains — the car was swept away. As a result, all of them drowned and died.

The Levies personnel and people of the area retrieved the bodies.
