BRT bus driver released on bail

PESHAWAR: A magistrate on duty on Sunday granted bail to the driver of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), arrested a day earlier after a woman died when hit by the bus while she was crossing the BRT track in Hayatabad Township.

Magistrate Ijazur Rehman ordered that the suspect, Sanan, should furnish two sureties of Rs100,000 each.

The suspect was arrested on Thursday after FIR of the occurrence was registered at Hayatabad police station under Section 320 of Pakistan Penal Code.

The investigation officer, Iftikhar Hussain, told Dawn that he had produced the suspect before the magistrate on duty and sought his 10-day physical custody.

However, he said that his bail plea was accepted by the court and the suspect was set free on bail.

He said that the suspect was a supervisor in the company imparting training to the drivers of the BRT buses and during training he was driving one of the buses.

He said that they had been investigating the case to ascertain on whose part the fault lies.

The deceased, who was around 30, was identified as Lubna, a resident of Tangi area of Charssada. She sued to work as house maid in Hayatabad.

The victim was crossing BRT track near Police School of Investigation when she was hit by the BRT bus.

As presently pedestrian overhead bridges have not been installed at most of the places, therefore, people have been crossing the BRT track through gaps in the fences on both sides of the track.
