HYDERABAD: A programme was held in the Latif Hall of the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS) on Monday as part of the Pakistan Day celebrations.

Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Hyderabad range Dr Ghulam Sarwar Jamali was the chief guest.

Speaking to a large number of students, teachers and other audience, the police officer called for promoting tolerance and discouraging extremism and terrorism in order to strengthen the country. This, he said, would also help democracy to flourish and interfaith harmony to prevail.

He said that Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah had envisioned a democratic and pluralistic state where Constitution and rule of law would reign supreme and where all communities would enjoy equal rights and opportunities.

“We pay tribute to the Father of the Nation and other leaders of the Freedom Movement who facilitated creation of Pakistan by uniting the nation through their earnestness, wisdom and unparalleled sacrifices,” he said.

LUMHS Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Bikha Ram Devrajani in his address said that that the goal of national and regional development could only be achieved in an environment of peace and tranquillity. “Pakistan is committed to refrain from and discourage all kinds of aggression, expansionism and exploitation as well as interference in the internal affairs of other states,” he said, adding that it expected from other members of the international community to follow the same.

He observed that a warlike situation amid certain developments in the region over the past three decades destroyed regional peace and stability. The armed forces of Pakistan took this challenge with determination and courage and succeeded in restoring peace through the Zarb-i-Azb and Raddul Fasaad operations.

“Pakistan Day is a unique day in our history. On this day, our forefathers resolved to become the masters of their own destinies. This was to be done by establishing a modern, strong and democratic state. The Pakistan Resolution truly reflects our deep national and historical aspirations and desires. On this day, we pay rich tribute to our leaders, elders, martyrs and heroes who rendered great sacrifices for the realisation of our dreams,” he said.

During the programme, students gave thrilling performances by staging tableaux, singing national songs and presenting other theatrical shows to highlight Pakistan Movement and the role of national heroes.

Earlier, a flag-hoisting ceremony was performed by VC Devrajani and AIG Jamali along with Major Mansoor of the Qasim Rangers.

LUMHS seeks control of T.M. Khan hospital

The LUMHS administration has formally sought control of the Tando Mohammad Khan district headquarters hospital and establishment of a dental college in that health facility.

In a letter addressed to the Sindh universities and boards secretary, LUMHS registrar Dr Ghulam Murtaza Dayo said that handing over of the hospital to it would help provide better health facilities to the people coming from six districts — Tando Mohammad Khan, Badin, Sujawal, Thatta, Umerkot and Tharparkar — having a population of more than six million.

In this regard, he referred to the resolution passed in the 46th meeting of the LHUMHS syndicate held on Jan 26 which called for approaching the Sindh government to start the process. He recalled that VC Prof Dr Devrajani had recently visited the T.M. Khan health facility and was advised by stakeholders to ponder over establishment of a dental college under the control of the university.
