From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1944: Seventy-five years ago: Concession to detenus

LAHORE: The Civil Disobedience detenus contained in the Punjab jails have been allowed the concession of playing out-door games, said Syed Amjad Ali, Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier, replying to a question in the Punjab Assembly this afternoon [March 23]. This was now possible, he added, with the release of up to March 1, 1944 of 353 Civil Disobedience detenus to make arrangements where this was impossible previously.

Replying to another question Syed Amjad Ali denied that Civil Disobedience prisoners of Delhi Province were detained in camp jail, Ferozepore, where sanitary conditions were far from satisfactory. He said that they were confined in the annexe which was part of the District Jail, Ferozepore, where sanitary conditions were quite satisfactory. No complaint had been received against any difficulty for purposes of interviews due to long distance.

The Assembly to-day passed four official Bills, namely, the Punjab Pre-emption (Amendment) Bill, the Court of Wards (Amendment) Bill, the Epidemic Diseases (Amendment) Bill and the Punjab Land Preservation (Amendment) Bill. The Sikh Gurdwaras (Amendment) Bill which has been sponsored by Akali Party and which has aroused keen interest among the Sikhs in Punjab was referred to a Select Committee consisting of 25 members. — Dawn Delhi
