KARACHI: The army was called in to guard certain Government installations in Karachi on Sunday [March 23] afternoon but the West Pakistan Governor, Mr Yusuf Haroon, assured that the people should have no fears about Martial Law.

Speaking at a Press conference in Karachi on Sunday evening, he said that the army had been inducted at the suggestion of the local Administration to relieve the Police from certain strategic points for additional duty during Moharrum. Replying to Newsmen’s questions, Mr Yusuf Haroon said his Government would seek the help of the army wherever it was necessary and explained that he had no authority to impose Martial Law. However, he said, the situation was not that serious as Martial Law could only be imposed in extreme cases when the law and order situation had broken down. — Correspondent
