Policeman gunned down in Karachi

KARACHI: A police constable was shot dead ahead of the launching of a combing operation by law enforcers in Hijrat Colony near PIDC on Saturday night, according to the Civil Lines police.

The constable, Jehangir, 28, and other policemen in plain clothes had gone to the area for reconnaissance purpose on the basis of which the ‘combing operation’ had to be launched in the area, said South SSP Pir Mohammed Shah.

He said the policemen signalled two men riding a motorcycle to stop. Instead, the motorcyclists accelerated and opened fire on the policemen, he added.

Jehangir received bullet wounds and he was rushed to the JPMC where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival. Dr Seemin Jamali, executive director of the hospital, said the victim received bullet wounds on his chest.

It may be recalled that the both the police and Rangers have launched ‘combing operations’ in different parts of the city ahead of PSL cricket matches in the city.
