Minister for changes to law to curb illegal organ trade

LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Health Dr Yasmin Rashid has hinted at amendments to the law to tighten the noose around doctors and hospitals performing transplantation of human organs without getting registered with the Punjab Healthcare Commission (PHC).

While presiding over a meeting of Punjab Human Organs Transplantation Authority at the office of the specialised healthcare and medical education department here on Friday, she directed the authority officials to draft and forward a set of recommendations to the law department in this regard.

Specialised healthcare Secretary Saqib Zafar and Human Organs Transplantation Authority Director General Prof Dr Faisal Masood also attended the meeting besides other senior officers concerned.

Dr Yasmin said that the upcoming amendments would help control the illegal sale and purchase of human organs in the province.

The meeting gave formal approval to the budget for the development projects of the transplantation authority. It also approved in-house training of doctors regarding transplantation of human organs besides setting up of a new building for the authority.
