Going solar

AS renewable energy systems are becoming economical and easier to integrate in our homes, it is commendable that our local electric power utilities in Pakistan, particularly Islamabad Electric Supply Company, Lahore Electric Supply Company and Karachi Electric, are taking proactive steps in assisting the power users to become ‘prosumers’, or producer-consumers.

Net metering is one such mechanism that allows residential, commercial and even industrial consumers to sell excess electricity generated back to the utility. With good quality solar photovoltaic (PV) modules and inverters now ubiquitous, and costing less than Rs100,000 for one kW system, it is not just lucrative but necessary that we utilise our ample rooftop spaces.

Come summer days when the bills soar through the roof and power outages occur frequently, these systems will be life-saving when mercury touches 40 plus on a daily basis.

However, care must be taken both when procuring the services of solar installers and when interconnecting the system with the grid. Using reliable solar PV installers, one can easily invest in these opportunities that are bound to pay back well.

Solar PV systems allow us to be energy conscious and environment-friendly. As someone who works in the energy industry, my recommendation for readers is to go solar.
