ISLAMABAD: At a time when most educational institutions in the federal capital are facing problems in accommodating students due to capacity issues, some 163 schools have not yet increased enrolments.

The number of students has not increased in these schools even though they have the required resources.

These 163 educational institutions operating in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) have enrolled a total of 152,029 students when they have the capacity to accommodate 176,920.

On the other hand, some 20 model colleges in the capital city were forced to enrol more students than they have the capacity to accommodate.

Meanwhile, several schools in the six ICT sectors have the capacity to enrol more students but have not been able to attract admissions.

Educational institutions in Urban-II sector have the capacity for 8,330 and are currently catering to 5,385.

The 22 schools in Urban-I have the capacity to accommodate 19,040 students but cater to 14,006.

The 44 schools in Bhara Kahu can hold 14,945 students but have 8,211 while the schools in Nilour have the capacity for 5,915 and have 2,815 students.

The 35 schools in Sihala can accommodate around 10,815 students but are 7,258 students short of reaching capacity.

Educational institutions in Tarnol have the capacity for 4,165 students but are currently accommodating 2,087.

Federal public schools and colleges have had over 3,000 vacant seats for teachers since 2009.

When asked, Federal Directorate of Education Director General Ali Ahmed Kharal said a comprehensive program has been initiated to bring out of school children to schools and that data is being collected from all ICT sectors. He said some 25 employees have been tasked with the collection of data.

He said efforts are also being made to grant admission to the maximum number of students as per the capacity of educational institutions.
