Death in custody sparks off protest

GUJRAT: A number of people on Wednesday staged a protest demonstration against the Pahrianwali police for allegedly torturing a 26-year-old suspect to death.

Reports said Sarfraz Ahmed, a rickshaw driver, was detained by the police to investigate theft-related incidents in the area and during the course of probe some policemen allegedly subjected him to torture that resulted in his death.

A source said police had shifted him to the hospital where doctors pronounced him dead upon which the family and the locals gathered at the Pahrianwali bus stand and blocked the road against the incident.

The protesters were demanding arrest of the police officials involved in the alleged murder of Sarfraz and registration of a case against them. The body was shifted to Phalia THQ hospital for autopsy.

Police sources say Sarfraz was a drug addict as investigation into the case is under way. No case was registered till late at night on Wednesday.
