Senior lawyer shot dead in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: A senior lawyer was shot dead over a property dispute here on Monday, police said.

An official at the Gulberg police station told Dawn that Niazmeen Shah, a lawyer of the Peshawar High Court, was shot dead in Nauthia area of the city.

The official said the lawyer was sitting in a rickshaw when his enemies opened fire, killing him on the spot.

He said the deceased had a property dispute, which has already claimed a person’s life in Bhanmari area.

Following the lawyer’s killing, his family members took to the streets and also tried to set houses of their opponents on fire.

An officer at the Bhanmari police station told Dawn that the police were searching for the persons who tried to torch the houses.

Meanwhile, SSP operations Javed Iqbal, in a statement, announced to appoint SP city Sahafiullah Gandapur as inquiry officer and directed him to submit a report into the attempt to set the houses ablaze within 24 hours. He also directed the officials to arrest the accused immediately.

Also, the Peshawar High Court Bar Association announced to boycott court proceedings across the province in protest against the killing of the lawyer on Tuesday (today), according to statement.
