Girls among four killed in Chilas accident

GILGIT: Four people of a family, including three teenage girls and a woman, were killed and four others were injured when a vehicle plunged into a deep ravine along the Karakoram Highway near Chilas here on Thursday.

The injured included two teenage girls, a woman and the driver. The vehicle was bound for Mardan from Gilgit.

The accident occurred as the driver lost the vehicle’s control due to ice frozen on the road.

The rescue workers retrieved four bodies from the ravine and shifted them along with the injured to the Diamer District Headquarters Hospital.

The hospital sources said the condition of three injured was out of danger, while the driver’s condition was critical.

The police said they dispatched the bodies to the deceased’s hometown, Mardan, for burial after legal procedure was fulfilled and postmortem was done.

They said they had begun investigation after registering a case.

CHILLY WEATHER: The dry and cold weather continued across Gilgit-Baltistan on Thursday with the minimum temperature in upperareas of GB reaching minus 16 Centigrade.

The remote areas of the region remained disconnected from other parts of the country due to snowfall.

The inclement weather paralysed life.

Meanwhile, a man committed suicide in Upper Gas village of Diamer area on Thursday.

The police said 50-year-old Amanullah Khan, father of five sons, ended life by jumping into the Indus near his hometown.

They said the deceased had been mentally disturbed for many years. The body was later recovered from the river.
