FROM THE PAST PAGES OF DAWN: 1943: Seventy-five years ago: Mr. Jinnah’s civic address

KARACHI: An appeal to every one to make his contribution to bring about a settlement of the communal problem was made by Mr. Jinnah in a speech this evening [Dec 23]. Mr. Jinnah, replying to an address of welcome presented to him by Karachi Municipal Corporation said:

“I know it is the universal desire among all communities that instead of the bitterness, the feuds and the futile controversies in which we waste our time and energies, there should be a friendly settlement between ourselves. It is not merely by expressing a desire or wishing for it that we can accomplish it. I appeal to every one to make a concrete, solid and definite contribution to bring about that settlement.”

The address which was read by the Mayor, Mr. Shambunath Mulraj, expressed the hope that divine wisdom would guide the deliberations of the Muslim League so that their decisions might link the two great communities together, enabling the country to take its rightful place among the united nations of the world.

Apropos of the report that the Pir of Bharchundi had talks with Mr. Jinnah regarding co-education and the observance of ‘purdah’, Mr. Jinnah’s Secretary informs the Press that the interview was merely a brief personal meeting and there was no discussion of any topics of the kind reported.
