NAB files reference against former minister, his wife

PESHAWAR: The National Accountability Bureau, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has filed a reference against former federal minister Dr Arbab Alamgir and his wife, Asma Alamgir, an ex-MNA, in an accountability court for possessing assets disproportionate to their known sources of income.

The accountability court judge Ishtiaq Ahmad has issued notices to both the suspects directing them to appear before it on Jan 3.

The NAB has alleged that during investigation it was revealed that both the suspects had accumulated assets to the tune of Rs332 million, which were disproportionate to their known sources of income, according to a statement.

The statement said that the current reference was pertaining to their assets in Pakistan whereas a supplementary reference regarding their foreign assets would be filed after receipt of documentary evidence through mutual legal assistance from the foreign countries.

The couple, belonging to Pakistan Peoples Party, had claimed innocence and stated that all their assets were acquired through known sources.

On Nov 8, 2018, the Peshawar High Court had disposed of a writ petition filed by Asma Alamgir against issuance of frequent call-up notices to her by NAB, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The court had directed the bureau to complete within 45 days the ongoing inquiry against the former woman lawmaker.

She had claimed that the said inquiry had been in progress for over four years. She had stated that the bureau had constantly been issuing her notices as it had failed to collect any evidence of wrongdoing against her.
