Six GDA officers held for corruption

GUJRANWALA: The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) arrested six officers of the Gujranwala Development Authority (GDA) on corruption charges while its director general managed to escape.

ACE Regional Director Fareed Ahmad identified the arrested officers as Tariq Rauf, Umar Farooq, Rana Zia, Ehsan Cheema and Ameen Sukhera and Tahir Shah, saying they were involved in corruption of millions of rupees in 232 housing schemes while the ACE held an inquiry into charges against them.

The probe proved the charges.

The officers were arrested from their offices while GDA Director General Maqbool Langah managed to escape after seeing the ACE raiding party.

A corruption case has been registered against them and further investigation is under way.

Staff Officer Haji Nisar Ahmed said Mr Langah was not involved in the corruption case.

It was stated that owners of housing scheme had sold the land earmarked for graveyards, mosques, playgrounds and community halls with connivance of the GDA officers.

MURDER: A former assistant professor of the Gujranwala Divisional Headquarters (DHQ) Teaching Hospital was shot dead by unidentified persons on Jinnah Road. Police arrested a suspect for the murder.

DHQ Teaching Hospital former assistant professor and urologist Dr Habib Alam was travelling by his car when an unidentified person opened fire on him near a marriage hall. Alam was killed on the spot.

His body was handed over to his family.

Police traced the suspect with the help of a CCTV footage and arrested him from Garden Town. They did not disclose the name of the arrested suspect.

Dr Alam was running a private hospital in Model Town.
