Separate bike lane on Sharea Faisal launched

KARACHI: Police authorities on Saturday announced launching of a separate lane for motorcyclists on Sharea Faisal.

“A separate yellow lane has been launched for motorbikes on Sharea Faisal from today,” said Karachi police chief Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh.

It would be made mandatory for bike riders to wear helmets while an awareness campaign to this effect would also be launched, he added.

Talking to media after attending a youth parliament at a university in Defence, he said that efforts were under way to make a separate lane for heavy vehicles on the Mai Kolachi Road.

Also on Saturday, DIG Traffic Javed Ali Mahar held a meeting with the “traffic enforcement unit” on Sharea Faisal and directed the officers to ensure that the bike riders must ride on their separate lane with helmets and people travelling in cars must wear seat belts.

‘Three model roads’

Inspector General of Police Dr Syed Kaleem Imam directed the city police chief to turn Sharea Faisal, Abdullah Haroon Road — from Metropole to Do Talwar roundabout — and I.I. Chundrigar Road into “model roads” with zero tolerance for violation of traffic rules.

In a letter, he also asked Dr Shaikh to persuade petrol pump owners located within the surroundings of these model roads to not sell fuel “to any motorcyclist who is not wearing a helmet”.
