From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1968: Fifty Years Ago: Asghar Khan’s plea

PESHAWAR: Air Marshal Asghar Khan, today [Nov 27] said that in his activities in the political arena he would keep politics above personalities. He was addressing the members of the Peshawar District Bar Association here today.

He said that the Armed Forces had a special role to play in the nation’s defence. They had been trained to fight and they should remain always prepared for fighting, and remain clear of the field of politics. He was confident that the Armed Forces would not “take more interest in the politics of the country than necessary”.

He said that the social, political and economic problems should be solved through social, political and economic programmes. Similarly, he asked the members of the Civil Services “to remain impartial in the present turmoil and uncertain conditions”.

“Let the political movement take its own course,” he said. Air Marshal Asghar Khan also asked the lawyers here today to continue to play their “magnificent” role in the revival of values in the country for which Pakistan was established.

He said that their profession had played a great role in the establishment of Pakistan and expected them to make a similar contribution now. The Air Marshal also lauded the role of the people of this area in the creation of Pakistan.... — Agency
