From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1943: Seventy-five years ago: Turkey may cede

MADRID: The German Ambassador to Turkey Franz Von Papen who has arrived in Berlin will make an important report to Hitler on the “real results of the Cairo talks” between Mr. Eden and the Turks, according to the Berlin correspondent of the Spanish newspaper today [Nov 17].

Von Papen, the correspondent writes, has arrived in Berlin at a moment which may be considered delicate. He says that Berlin quarters have always trusted the objectivity and sagacity shown by the Turkish leaders in the defence of national interests.

Dealing with the Cairo talks the correspondent says that it was thought possible that Turkey, while safeguarding her policy of independence and maintaining her neutrality, might cede bases to her British ally. It was an open secret, he writes, that Turkey has made a splendid effort in the last few years in the sphere of aviation and has built a great number of larger aerodromes which are obviously not in consonance with the real importance of the Turkish Air Force. The Turkish Air Force, he added, has “in many cases not even occupied such aerodromes.” — Dawn Delhi
