Teacher’s death sparks protest

FAISALABAD: Public schools’ teachers boycotted their classes on Wednesday on the call of their union in protest at “illogical inquiries against them”.

They resorted to protest after Kotwali MC Higher Secondary School teacher Sharif Usmani’s death on Tuesday.

They alleged Mr Usmani was depressed due to inquiries against him which resulted in cardiac arrest.

Teachers from different schools gathered at the Kotwali school from where they began the procession which culminated at the District Council Chowk.

Education authority head Mohammad Ali and District Education Officer Khalid Akhtar held dialogues with teachers.

One of the protesters Hafiz Abdul Nasir said the officials assured them that a technical committee would be formed to review inquiries. He said the committee would drop complaints found baseless.

Following the talks, the teachers called off the protest movement.
