Torture or hearth attack?: Police looking into death of youth in custody

KASUR: The police are investigating into the death of a youth, who, according to the family, was tortured to death by the Raja Jang police in custody on Monday.

The family of deceased Jahangir said the youth had no crime history, while the police claim he was a suspected robber.

District Police Officer Shahzad Asif suspended the police officials from service and ordered Superintendent of Police Syed Ghazanfar Ali to probe into the case.

The police also registered a first information report on the complaint of deceased’s father Muhammad Noor, of Havali Mahtab Singh, that his sons Jahangir and Farooq had a row with some villagers over a trifle on Saturday. Late on Saturday, Assistant Sub-Inspector Muhammad Abbas and constables Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Anwar picked his sons and detained them at the police station.

On Monday, the police informed them that Jahangir died due to heart attack at the Kasur District Headquarters Hospital. Later, Noor with several villagers protested at the hospital.

According to the police, the medical examination of the deceased would reveal the cause of death.

BURNT: A man who was allegedly set to fire by his rivals on October 30 in village Naroki Mahja, succumbed to his injuries on Monday in the Lahore Jinnah Hospital.

According to the police, Tariq was a tractor-trolley driver at a brick kiln. Five days ago, he had a dispute with labourers, including Waris, over the monetary issue. Later, Waris, Achho, Zakir, Bao and three unidentified people took Tariq to the house of Bao at Naroki Mahja and beat him. Somehow, Tariq informed his father Saleem, who with six villagers arrived at the scene in a rickshaw. Seeing them, the accused sprinkled petrol on Tariq and set him on fire before fleeing the scene.

Tariq was rushed to the Pattoki Tehsil Headquarters Hospital to be referred to the Lahore Jinnah Hospital because of his critical condition. He died there on Monday.

The police arrested Waris and Achho and were raiding places to arrest the remaining accused.
