Apex court upholds de-seating of MPA

MANSEHRA: Supreme Court of Pakistan has upheld the verdict of Peshawar High Court about disqualification of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz MPA Mian Ziaur Rehman in the fake degree case.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar handed down the verdict to Mr Rehman, who was present in the court.

In August this year, the apex court had retained Peshawar High Court’s verdict of 2013 in wherein Mr Rehman was de-seated as MPA and disqualified for life to hold any public office.

Mr Rehman had moved again the apex court in August following Election Commission of Pakistan de-seated him in light of the verdict pronounced by Supreme Court.

“People of PK-30 are happy over the apex court verdict,” said Nadar Shah, the petitioner in the case. He said that after the verdict of apex court, ECP was bound to announce schedule for by-election in PK-30.

Mr Shah had moved PHC for disqualification of Mr Rehman in a fake degree case when the latter was elected MPA in 2013 general elections but the case was pending when he was again elected MPA in 2018 general elections.

Mr Rehman, according to the PHC judgment, in his elusive declaration clearly reflected in the nomination form his educational qualification as BA on the basis of a ‘Sanad’ that was fake and fabricated.
