From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1943: Seventy-five years ago: Freedom from want

GORAKHPUR: A father living in police circle Kasia is reported to have killed his two children (a son and a daughter) with a spade. It is reported that the children demanded food from their mother who directed them to their father who was working at his farm. In a fit of anger, he killed his son with the spade first and then his daughter. In a statement to the police he is said to have confessed that he did so as he could not provide them food.

An old man of village Barauli of Pipraich police circle is alleged to have committed suicide as he could not feed his children.

A woman is reported to have sold her child to a man in mohalla Jatepur for Rs. 5. The reason for the sale is not ascertained. The man who purchased the child had no issue.

[Meanwhile, as reported from Calcutta,] the Director of Public Information states that on Octo­ber 16 there were 101 admissions of sick destitutes in the Behala Hospital, 90 in the Campbell Hospital and one in the Kamarhatty Hospital. There were 43 deaths in the Behala Hospital, five in the Lake Club Hospital, 24 in the Campbell Hospital, six in the Kamarhatty Hospital, four in the Public Library Hospital, Utarpara and three in the Sanat Kumar Hospital, Utarpara. — Dawn Delhi
