RAWALPINDI: The expatriate, who allegedly killed his wife and a daughter in Kallar Syedan on Saturday, was caught while trying to fly out of the country from Islamabad International Airport (IIA) early on Monday.

The police had alerted the Federal Investigation Agency’s immigration staff at the IIA to prevent the suspect from leaving the country as the process to include his name in the Exit Control List would take time.

A security official told Dawn that the suspect had gotten his security check and immigration cleared and was waiting for a flight to Spain when investigating officer Zaheer Butt arrested him at about 3:30am.

A senior police official told Dawn that the suspect would be produced before a court for his remand custody.

Tariq Mehmood had settled in Spain 15 years ago and returned to Pakistan on Oct 3. After landing at Allama Iqbal International Airport Lahore, he came to Kallar Syedan on Saturday afternoon.

According to the police, Mr Mehmood had married Rukhsana about 27 years ago and the couple had four daughters and a son.

Mr Mehmood wanted to marry off his daughter according to his wish but she got her Nikah solmenised on her own.

After reaching home, he had a brawl with his wife over the marriage dispute. During the brawl, he pulled out a pistol and opened fire at Rukhsana, 45, his daughters Durre Shahwar, 23, Umme Kulsoom, 20, and Najma Tariq, 17. Ms Rukhsana and Kulsoom died while being taken to hospital. Durre Shahwar and Najma Tariq were shifted to the Holy Family Hospital (HFH).
