From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1968: Fifty Years Ago: TV’s progress

DACCA: President Ayub Khan has said that the Television must not only mirror our society, but also lead the way. It must raise and sustain in us the urge to combat prejudice, indifference and stagnation.

In a message on the foundation stone laying ceremony of Dacca Television House, the President said: “I have followed the development of this new medium with interest, and I am satisfied with its progress.

“I have repeatedly emphasised the importance of accepting and utilising all the modern instruments of technological change which the scientific world has made available to us. It is only thus that we can compress into a few decades developments and changes which the industrialised West achieved gradually over a period of centuries. We are engaged in a battle against time.

“Television can help in activating our rural population and in stimulating the minds of the vast urban adult population which has not been able to acquire formal literacy. It should promote awareness of our history and a consciousness of problems. Television must not only mirror our society but also lead the way.”
