Man held for desecrating Holy Quran in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: The city police arrested a person on charge of desecrating Holy Quran and a mosque in the limits of Khazana police station on Monday.

A police official told Dawn that the accused was held while he was setting fire to carpets in a mosque and copies of Holy Quran.

The official said that the incident took place in Ghari Khan Baba area.

Meanwhile, the police claimed on Monday to have killed a proclaimed offender in an encounter in Pishtakhara area.

Officials claimed that proclaimed offender identified as Sharasay was killed near the Sarhad University on the Ring Road. They said the outlaw had killed a police constable about two months ago and was also wanted in robbery and murder cases.

Relevant officials were not available for comment on the circumstances leading to the encounter, and police station concerned also refused to comment on the issue on the pretext of pending details.

Sources said two outlaws also managed to escape from the scene.
