FROM THE PAST PAGES OF DAWN: 1968: Fifty years ago: Karachiites’ praised

KARACHI: Capt Gohar Ayub, MNA and Chairman of the Karachi Muslim League Co-ordination Committee, has praised the courage, discipline and patience of Karachiites in facing the water crisis.

In a Press statement yesterday [Sept 15] he said bursting of the main water pipeline caused extreme water famine in the entire city, disrupting normal life. Water was being sold by unscrupulous elements at exorbitant prices. The limited water carriers in the city were pressed into service by the Administration. Everyone was affected alike.

“The situation was not like flood, fire or relief operations where necessary items could be conveniently supplied by political or social organisations. We had to wait till the KDA repaired the damaged pipeline. They have done a good job in restoring the water supply to the City, but they should be prepared to meet such an eventuality more speedily.

“Bursting of the pipeline only after 10 years of its laying shows it may happen again. The administration must investigate the cause and fix the responsibility. The KDA must ensure that the pipes to be laid in phases I and II of the Karachi Bulk Water Supply are so manufactured that the citizens of Karachi are not faced with water famine again.”
