FROM THE PAST PAGES OF DAWN: 1943: Seventy-five years ago: Jinnah’s appeal

BOMBAY: An appeal to the Muslims all over India to contribute their might to the relief fund opened by the Calcutta Muslim Chamber of Commerce is made by Mr. M.A. Jinnah in a statement to the Press. Mr. Jinnah says:-

“I am greatly pained to hear of the condition of the people of Bengal and the distress that prevails in that province due to the shortage of food. I have been informed that the Bengal Ministry is doing its best to grapple with the difficult situation that has arisen, but they require the help and the co-operation of individuals and organisations in giving succour to the starving people.

I, therefore, appeal to the Muslims all over India and especially in Bengal to come to the rescue of the people of Bengal by contributing their might to the Relief Fund opened by the Calcutta Muslim Chamber of Commerce to which I was sending my personal contribution of Rs. 1,000 addressed to the Calcutta Muslim Chamber of Commerce Relief Fund through the President of the Chamber.

I sincerely hope that the Mussalmans will not fail to make their contributions for the purpose of removing the hardships and the suffering of the people of Bengal and go to their rescue whole-heartedly.”
