Chenab waters recede after inundating crops

CHINIOT: The water level in the Chenab receded to 150,000 cusecs on Wednesday noon after touching a peak of 250,000 (0.25 million) cusecs on Tuesday night.

The river is in low flood and water inundated crops over some 400 acre land in a dozen villages situated on both sides of Chenab.

The district administration is keeping an eye on the situation through its control room set up in the office of Additional Deputy Commissioner General Aitzaz Marth.

Chiniot Deputy Commissioner Khizer Afzaal visited a number of low-lying villages - Babur Rai, Burj Umar, Burj Mall - and later held a meeting with health, livestock, Rescue 1122 and irrigation departments to ensure their preparedness for the possible flood.

The meeting was told that seven flood relief centres were established in three tehsils where rescue teams were alert to any evacuation while health and livestock teams were also available there for first aid.

ADCG Aitzaz Marth told newsmen that flood did not inflict damage on any residential area so far “and the situation is under control. No loss to cattle or property has been reported so far. We are estimating the area of crops inundated.”

He said flood warning was issued to low-lying villages through loudspeakers.

PO HELD: Saddar police claimed on Wednesday to have arrested proclaimed offender Muhammad Nawaz who had allegedly killed Asmatullah over an old enmity some four years ago.

Saddar police arrested him after they received a tip-off that he was hiding in a farmhouse.

District Police Officer Ibadat Nisar has announced cash prize for the team comprising SIs Farooq, Zafarullah and ASI Aurang Zeb.
