LAHORE: The Neelum-Jhelum Hydropower Project attained on Tuesday its maximum generation capacity of 969MW on a trial basis as all the four units of this strategically important scheme are generating power according to the installed ability of 242.25MW each.

Wapda Chairman retired Lt Gen Muzammil Hussain congratulated the NJHP management, engineers and other employees on this achievement.

Wapda, according to a spokesman, commissioned this project under a phased manner. The first unit was commissioned in April this year, followed by the remaining three units coming into operation after one month’s interval each. The fourth and last unit was synchronised with the National Grid on Monday and attained its maximum generation capacity on Tuesday.

“The project is a state-of-the art one with 90% being underground and beneath the high mountainous areas. The project, constructed on River Neelum in Azad Kashmir, has a dam at Nauseri, an underground waterway system consisting of 52-km long tunnels and an underground powerhouse at Chattar Kalas with four power generating units,” the spokesman said.
