Illegal arms seized in Swabi

SWABI: The police on Saturday seized a huge quantity of arms and ammunition from a rickshaw in Chota Lahor region.

Police officials told Dawn that security had been tightened at all the entry and exit points of the district to ensure peaceful passage of Independence Day celebrations across the district.

SHO Tordher police station Altaf Khan said that a rickshaw appeared from the Jahangira side during checking of vehicles on the Swabi-Jahangira road, but when the driver saw the police he abandoned the three-wheeler and sped away.

The official said the police had erected blockade near the Jahangira bridge to check suspected vehicles.

He said that during search of the rickshaw police recovered Kalashnikovs, repeaters, Kalakovs, rifle magazines, pistols and rounds. He said the arms were hid in plastic sacks.

The SHO said DSP Chota Lahor Iqbal Khan led the police action.

Another police official said they had traced the name of the person who was expected to get the arms, adding the police had already raided his house and other hideouts but he had gone underground.

An FIR of the incident was registered in Tordher police station.
