From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1968: Fifty Years Ago: Boat tragedy

PESHAWAR: The death toll in yesterday’s [Aug 9] Nowshera boat tragedy today rose to 25, following inquiries by the police. The boat, it was stated, was carrying about 35 passengers when it capsized. It had a capacity for 20 persons only. Only nine persons were officially counted to have survived. The boatman has been arrested by the Police on the charge of overloading his boat.

Meanwhile, the body of a minor boy has so far been recovered by the rescue parties. Among the victims were included women and children. Mr Roshen Amir, Assistant Commissioner, Nowshera, told [agency] on telephone this afternoon that rescue operations were resumed this morning. About eight rescue boats were at present combing the entire area around the place of the tragedy.

[Meanwhile, as reported by our correspondent in Karachi,] a young man fell from a moving bus and was crushed under its wheel on Lawrence Road yesterday [Aug 10].
