FROM THE PAST PAGES OF DAWN: 1968: Fifty years ago: Israelis ‘used Napalm’

UNITED NATIONS: Jordan charged yesterday [Aug 8] that Israel employed Napalm in its bombing attack on Sunday on Jordanian territory. Jordanian Ambassador Muhammad Hussain El-Farra wrote to the UN Security Council, “It has become certain that in their attack against the city of Salt, the Israeli armed forces used Napalm bombs”. An Israeli delegation spokesman had no comment on the charge. The charge came on the eve of the Council’s fourth meeting today called by Jordan after the Israeli bombing attack.

El-Farra sent his letter to the Council President for this month, Brazilian Ambassador Joao Augusto de Araujo Castro, with some photographs which he asked to be “urgently circulated as official documents” of the Council. “The attached pictures,” he said, “show clearly that the Israeli attack was aimed at civilian lives, their means of transportation, their agricultural products and above all against first-aid vehicles of the Red Crescent.”

Meanwhile, diplomatic sources said Algeria, Pakistan and Senegal were working on a resolution to condemn the air attack, censure Israel for it and reaffirm a March 24 resolution that threatened “more effective measures” if Israeli reprisal raids were repeated. — Agency

[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Jerusalem,] A small explosive charge went off in the Jewish sector of Jerusalem last night [Aug 8], damaging a fence near the United States’ Consulate. Police arrested several suspects after the blast, the second within seven days.
