MMA asks CEC to step down

PESHAWAR: The activists of Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal staged a protest demonstration here on Friday against alleged rigging in the July 25 general elections.

The demonstration was organised in Nishtarabad area which was addressed by the alliance’s leaders. The protesters holding banners chanted slogans against the Election Commission of Pakistan.

Addressing the protesters, Maulana Khairul Basher demanded resignation of the chief election commissioner and other members of the commission. He demanded re-election across the country.

Maulana Basher alleged that instead of holding the free, fair and transparent general elections the ECP conducted selection process in the country to facilitate a single political party. He said the total voter turnout was lower than the 2013 general elections, but the ECP had exaggerated the figures.

He said judiciary and army should also clarify their positions because these two institutions had been blamed for the poll rigging.

He vowed that MMA and other parties would continue their protest till holding of free and fair elections.
