From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1943: Seventy-five years ago: Students ‘invade’ secretariat

KARACHI: Demanding immediate hostel accommodation, 70 of the students of the newly founded Sind Madrassah College, which was recently opened by Mr. Jinnah, staged a demonstration at the Sind Secretariat on Monday.

They invaded the Ministerial galleries in the Secretariat and spread their beds in the verandah where they lay without food and water from morning till late in the afternoon.

The students’ complaint was that they had been stranded in Karachi for lack of accommodation, and hostel facilities must be provided for them immediately by the Minister-in-charge who is also the President of the Sind Madrassah Board. The Minister Pir Illahi Bux requisitioned a bungalow for the students and promised them that they would get hostel accommodation in four days.

[Meanwhile, as reported from London,] Hitler’s headquarters tonight [July 20] announces that Hitler and Mussolini met in a town in upper Italy yesterday. The announcement quoted by the German news agency says: “Military questions were discussed.”

The political correspondent of the German news agency wrote: “It is to be assumed that the developments in the Mediterranean area were in the forefront of the discussions. The military situation, particularly the onslaught of gigantic Soviet masses against the European defence in the east and the British and American landing in the Mediterranean, was examined.…”
