Let live

APROPOS the article ‘In praise of every rebel’ (June 13). Traditionally in Pakistani weddings, close family members are expected to be seen in ostentatious clothing and jewellery. I, however, decided to break with tradition and participated in my brother’s wedding in a simple dress. The response I received for my audacity were strange questions and snide remarks.

The writer has precisely highlighted the issue in our society where people are looked down upon when their preferences and inclinations differ from the rest of society. This not only goes against the simplicity preached by our religion, but is a breach of the fundamental right to privacy. It also propagates intolerance of any other narrative.

Conformist behaviour limits creativity and impedes growth. Societies that have advanced and achieved peace and harmony have openly welcomed all sorts of differences among its people.
