One killed, five injured in separate accidents

LAHORE: A man was killed while five others were injured in two separate road accidents in the city on Sunday.

In the first incident, a labourer, identified as Ilyas, 50, was crossing the road in Shahdara Town when a speeding van hit him. He suffered critical injuries and was shifted to hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

Police shifted the body to morgue and started efforts to arrest the van driver who had fled, leaving his vehicle on the scene.

In another incident, five people were injured when a bus hit the bridge of an underpass near the Jinnah Hospital on the Canal Road.

Police said the bus carrying 35 passengers was heading to the Pak Arab Housing Society to attend a marriage ceremony when its driver tried to the Jinnah Hospital under pass. The bus hit the bridge. Five people who were sitting on the rooftop of the bus suffered critical injuries and were shifted to hospital. They were identified as Qaisar, Ali Shujja, Ghulam Abbas, Mehboob and Daniyal. The accidents involving vehicles hitting the bridges of underpasses on the Canal Road have increased, despite warnings on the road regarding height of underpasses.

POISONED: A woman was allegedly poisoned to death by her husband in Shafiqabad.

Police said Sumera, 30, was living with her husband, Murtaza, and the couple would often quarrel with each other over minor issues. On Sunday, Sumera had some food and her condition deteriorated. Seeing her condition, her husband fled from the house. The neighbours heard hue and cry of Sumera and took her to hospital where she could not survive.

Police shifted the body to morgue for autopsy and registered the case.

According to initial police investigation, Sumera was poisoned by Murtaza.
