NO one can deny the importance of Nawaz Sharif’s call to “give respect to the vote.” The vote is crucial to democracy. But when in power, our politicians depart from all norms of democracy, without any regard for the vote.

There is a total disregard for the votes obtained by opponents. Both votes and voters ought to be respected equally. Progress should to be shared amongst all constituencies.

In a democracy there are no prejudices and there is room for differing viewpoints. But our leaders stick to their own opinions, disregarding those of others. The ruling party’s lawmakers think and behave as if they are immune to human weaknesses. Thus, the phrase “give respect to the vote” loses its significance.
