Nawaz Sharif

THE supporters and beneficiaries of the Sharif family, and those who want civilian supremacy over the military establishment are weeping for their leader Nawaz Sharif and on his downfall.

Sharif should have resigned when the Panama papers were leaked. Instead of apologising to the people of Pakistan and seeking their forgiveness, he decided to cover up the truth with lies and challenged the judiciary.

Now they are misleading the people by telling them that this is a punishment for the Sharif family for standing against the military establishment which wants to keep foreign and security affairs under its control.

I do not understand what relevance this argument has with the corruption committed by Sharif and his daughter. Is there no other country in which military establishment is not involved in the security and foreign policy? What about China? Is military not an integral part of the government?

The Sharifs are lucky that they ruled the country for so long and were able to buy 12 expensive properties only in London without any checks.

I suggest every Pakistani who has earned money in Pakistan and invested aboard should be asked either to bring it back or face the court.

IN April 2016, the Panama papers provided Nawaz Sharif the opportunity to be the political reformer he is trying to be lately. Back then, he should have resigned to establish a ‘truth and reconciliation commission’ for the 450 plus named in the leaks and everyone else with undeclared assets.

It is weird for Sharif and Maryam to connect Avenfield flats to 70 years of history, starting with the tragic murder of Liaquat Ali Khan, but not the post-1985 politics of which the Sharifs are an embodiment.
