Robots and industries

THERE is a general impression that with the introduction of robots and artificial intelligence (AI), industrialists could slash their skilled manpower. Experts in the field suggest that instead of firing manpower, they should reduce workers’ man-hours worked during a week.

In Pakistan’s case, however, this transition will take another two decades. Robot manufacturing facilities need to be set up which will require an additional workforce. So the question of retrenchment does not arise for another decade. On the other hand, we are confronted with numerous challenges e.g. water, gas and electricity shortages, deforestation, land erosion /land sliding etc.

If we are to compete globally, we need to train our labour to work abroad. European countries are hiring immigrants to cater to their industries’ needs in spite of benefiting from robotic technology. Since Pakistan has a large population, we need to train our manpower for this purpose. Boost in exports can only be achieved if we apply latest technologies.
