West Indies rout Bangladesh by innings

NORTH SOUND: Bangladesh delayed the inevitable for almost two hours when their last wicket fell to hand West Indies a crushing innings and 219-run victory in the first Test on Friday inside seven sessions.

Bangladesh, who were shot out for their lowest Test score of 43 in the first innings on Wednesday’s opening day, were all out for 144 in the second after resuming day three on 62-6.

West Indies showed the folly of the Bangladesh batsmen’s shot-making by posting 406.

Wicket-keeper/batsman Nurul Hasan stalled the home side’s attack with a career-best Test score of 64 off 74 balls before falling to Miguel Cummins. Nurul was the ninth wicket out. Rubel Hossain, with whom Nurul combined for 55, was last man out on 16, losing his leg stump to Cummins.

All four West Indies pacemen took five wickets in the match. Kemar Roach took five in 12 deliveries in the first innings and didn’t bowl in the second after hurting his hamstring. Nevertheless, Bangladesh also couldn’t handle Shannon Gabriel, Cummins, and captain Jason Holder.

Mahmudullah, on 15 overnight, was out to the second delivery of the morning without adding to his score. He edged Holder to third slip.

Next to go was Kamrul Islam Rabbi, whose middle stump was uprooted by Gabriel.

The collapse began on Thursday after West Indies had posted 406 with Kraigg Brathwaite scoring 121 and Shai Hope 67.

Gabriel had Tamim Iqbal (13) caught by Hope off the fourth delivery of the third over, before bowling Mominul Haque for a duck two balls later.

Holder removed Liton Das (2) to leave Bangladesh struggling on 16-3. Das was the only batsman to reach double figures in the visitors’ first innings.

Gabriel continued the demolition, removing Mushfiqur Rahim (8) and captain Shakib Al Hasan (12).
