Varsity students rally against increase in fee

PESHAWAR: Muttahida Talba Mahaz, an alliance of different students groups, on Friday held a rally against the administration of the University of Peshawar for increase in fees and warned to move court and also start agitation if the decision was not withdrawn.

The students gathered outside the Peshawar Press Club, holding banners and placards inscribed with demands for withdrawal of the increase in fees, and urged the caretaker chief minister to take notice of the injustice with them.

On the occasion, the leaders of the students’ alliance recalled that the varsity had also increased fee when the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf government ruled the province, forcing them to agitate. They said the students called off the protest after the former education minister had assured them of withdrawing the fee increase, but to no avail.

They said during the previous government the fee was increased by 10 per cent, but the varsity administration had now announced 20 per cent increase to shut doors on the poor students. They also expressed concern over the closure of university hostels.

The protesters demanded of NAB to take notice of the construction work in the university which was initiated without fulfilling the legal requirements.
