From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1968: Fifty Years Ago: Won’t give up plebiscite

SRINAGAR: Sheikh Abdullah has ruled out talks or a dialogue with the Indian Government until India concedes the right of self-determination to Kashmiris.

Addressing a public meeting here last night [June 30], he said this was a question of life and death for Kashmiris and there could not be any compromise on this issue.

Sheikh Abdullah said he would not submit to threats and India could not subjugate Kashmiris by force. He wanted Indian leaders to take a lesson from Hitler and his propaganda machine and give Kashmiris their rights. He said Kashmiris would continue their struggle to secure their rights on peaceful, non-communal lines.

Sheikh Abdullah said that following a recent visit to held Kashmir by Indian leaders (the Prime Minister Mrs Indira Gandhi and the Home Minister, Mr Y.B. Chavan) the puppet Government had started a “smear campaign” against him.

He described the puppet Chief Minister Sadiq, the held state Congress Chief, Syed Mir Qasim, and former puppet Premier Bakhshi Ghulam Mohammad as “traitors to the cause of Kashmiris” who were living on the charity of Indian Government and in return were misleading the people of Kashmir.
