Taxila MC chairman unseated after no-confidence motion

TAXILA: Taxila Municipal Committee Chairman Mehmood Hussain Shah was unseated after a no-confidence motion against him and his deputy was approved on Thursday.

The no-confidence motion against the PML-N backed MC chairman and vice chairman Zeeshan Butt was moved to secretary Punjab Local Government and Community Development by treasury members and 15 opposition members on April 21.

The motion sought the appointment of a representative for the completion of legal procedure as the opposition group said they had the required support- 16 councillors out of 30- to submit a no-confidence move.

The no-confidence session was presided over by Punjab Local Government and Community Development Rawalpindi District Deputy Director Malik Abid. The mover of the motion 21 signatories from opposition and treasury benches and the motion was adjourned successful.

Mr Butt had already resigned from his post as he was awarded a PML-N ticket for the provincial assembly.

During the last six months, there was a tug of war in the committee regarding the distribution of funds, award of contracts and other administrative issues.

The ruling party in the municipal committee was divided in two major groups over allegations of corruption, nepotism and mismanagement.

There are 18 PML-N backed councillors in the house and 10 Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf ones.

Due to rifts in the party, the treasury bench also supported the motion against their own leader of the house.
