Parts of city may receive drizzle today also

KARACHI: While the city’s sky remained partly covered with clouds and sea breeze kept making inroads into the city throughout the day, keeping the weather humid, a few areas received drizzle on Thursday, said a Meteorological department official. He predicted similar weather conditions for Friday.

Responding to Dawn’s queries, the Met official said that some towns in the interior of Sindh had also received rain during the past 24 hours and rain and thundershowers were expected at different places in the province on Friday also.

Rainfall was also reported in the catchment area of the Hub Dam owing to which some water has started to trickle in to the reservoir that could provide some relief to the water-scare localities in the metropolis hooked to the Hub source.

The official said that while different areas of the city received drizzle on Thursday, the heaviest precipitation was reported in the Landhi and airport areas where two millimetres rain was measured.

He said that the old city area received 0.5mm of rain while only traces of rain were reported in some other places, including North Karachi, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, University Road, Safoora Goth, etc.

He said the maximum temperature recorded in the city on Thursday was 33 degrees Celsius and the minimum was 29.3 degrees Celsius. Humidity in the morning was 82 per cent and in the evening it fell to 62pc.

He said rain and thundershowers were likely on Friday and the maximum temperature was expected to remain between 34 and 36 degrees Celsius.

Responding to queries, the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board spokesperson said that owing to the rain in the Khirthar mountain range and other catchment areas of the Hub Dam, rainwater had started to accumulate in the reservoir and as more rain fell, more water would flow into the dam. This would provide relief to the residents of West and Central districts that get water from the Hub Dam and currently are facing a severe water shortage.

Meanwhile, a rain emergency has been imposed by the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board and special teams have been formed in districts East, South, West and Malir.
