From The Past Pages Of Dawn: 1968: Fifty Years Ago: Plea to end disparity

AYUB HALL: Participating in the general discussion on the Budget the Leader of the Opposition Mr Nurul Amin warned the Government that a dark cloud is looming large in the Eastern horizon and urged the Government try harder to end inter-wing disparity [June 20]. Disparity, he said was of three types (1) disparity in services, (2) economic disparity and (3) political disparity.

The Leader of the Opposition said even if the Government’s contention that disparity was a legacy of the past be accepted the present Government could not be absolved of its own share of responsibility. After all, they were the people in the saddle of a running concern.

He said the Government should make a political decision to give 50 per cent representation to people of East Pakistan in the services. He complained that the percentage of East Pakistanis in higher cadres was very small.

The Opposition member said that the Information Minister, Khwaja Shahabuddin, had asked Opposition parties not to create disaffection and hatred between different sections of the people and two wings of the country.
