Young man’s death in Landhi road accident sparks protest

KARACHI: A fast-moving trailer crushed a young man to death in Landhi on Wednesday, police said.

The incident prompted the area people to lodge a forceful protest against police for apparently allowing heavy vehicles to pass through the residential area during daytime.

The police said that Yasin Mohammed, 25, was sitting outside his home in C-1 area of Landhi when the trailer ran him over.

The victim’s body got stuck in the vehicle but the driver did not stop and tried to speed away. He hit and broke the concrete barrier of a storm-water drain. This also damaged the vehicle forcing the driver to abandon the trailer and escape.

Area people rushed to the spot and retrieved the body. They staged a protest demonstration on the scene and demanded the arrest of the driver and owner of the trailer.

The protesters also alleged that policemen in collusion with operators of heavy vehicles allowed such trailers to pass through their residential colony instead of the Korangi Industrial Area.

Owing to protest, a traffic mess was witnessed on adjoining arteries for a considerable period before the authorities persuaded the protesters to vacate the place.

The protest was ended after the authorities assured that the driver would be arrested.

The victim worked at a printing press.

The body bore torture marks. He was shot in the chest.

The police said that the deceased had alleged links with Lyari gangsters. He left his house in Dalmia on Tuesday night and it appeared that he was kidnapped, tortured and shot somewhere else since no spent bullet casing was found from the crime scene.

The deceased’s mobile phone and his motorbike were also recovered from the scene.

Stabbed to death

A man was killed over a trivial issue in New Town late on Tuesday night, according to police.

They added that Shafiq Mohammed was murdered allegedly by a teenager, identified as Masood, near Old Sabzi Mandi.

The police said that the suspect worked at a nearby eatery and he went to buy a chicken roll from a vendor where a scuffle broke out between them.

The suspect took an iron skewer (seekh) and stabbed the victim in the abdomen.

The police said he was taken into custody.
